Log 5: Is "Stormy" The Name Of A Pokemon? Just Wondering
Hi, I'm growing plants & documenting their progress so this is log 5, let's go.
(I think somehow this didn't post last week so I'm posting now, sorry)
Good morning, or afternoon, or evening or whatever time it is. And hey, Happy New Year! The day after Log 5 (or when I was supposed to post it, since I actually did it late), I went on a trip for the rest of the week. I got back today. I was really worried about my plants and thought I'd have to get someone else to water them for me. But THANK GOODNESS. THANK GOD. THANK EVERYTHING. It was raining like, everyday, and then there was a huge storm. That also concerned me. I was fairly sure that most of the plants would be able to handle it, but I was scared for the poppies that I'm growing from seed. They're still so delicate, and the area where I live got pretty flooded. At least I live on a hill, and I keep the plants on sort of higher ground. Thankfully, all plants were okay, and I think they mostly benefitted from the rain. I'm just about to calculate the growth rates, so we'll see how they all did!
also, the storm seemed to have harmed the plants a bit. I found a broken off leaf, probably from one of the asters. I didn't find any others, though.
Aster A - 14" Growth rate (per day this week): 0.21! It grew 1.5 inches, that's great! I thought it would have grown even more from the storm giving so much rain. That's a good amount of growth, but maybe it would be better if it was sunnier.
Aster B - 11.5" Growth rate: 0.07 This one grew half an inch, which is pretty good considering how much trouble this particular plant usually gives me. At least it's finally getting a little taller.
Aster C - 10" This one lost a whole inch, that sucks. I think the storm must have really hit it hard. This plant is one of my shorter asters. The one leaf that was left was the only thing adding to a lot of the height is shown below.
Aster D - 11" Lost half an inch. You win some, you lose some. One of the leaves (pictured) seemed to have really gotten roughed up. It had a rip in the middle, and also felt oddly dry. Oof.
Aster E - 12.5" Growth rate: 0.07" Gained half an inch. you can see the brand new leaves growing at the top of it, which gave it that extra boost.
Yarro F - I didn't measure it because y'know, it's overall pretty small. But they all seem to be doing super well, including the poppy seedlings.
Yarro G - 6" Growth rate: 0.07" I never expected the yarro plants to really grow taller, but tada! This one gained 0.5 inches! Not bad. Obviously, that one leaf got really tall.
Yarro H - This one is, as I predicted, the same. That leaf that was giving it height that started dying last week is definitely more dead. I'm holding it in the picture.
Yarro I - 5.5" also the same. Have you noticed the baby yarro that have been growing in the same pot as the big one? They look like they are doing really well!
Strawberry J - I don't measure the wild strawberries either, but I can tell that it grew a few new leaves! It looks shinier and smoother than the others, plus it's a bit smaller.
Strawberry K - I didn't notice anything new with this one.
Poppy L - I've decided I should keep count of the sprouts, so today I counted 8. Last week there were maybe 3 or 4, so they doubled! I know the biggest looking one is very likely to be a weed, but last week I wanted to see how it would grow up. It developed another little leaf that is shaped differently than its two long ones hanging down the sides. I also suspect there are two more weeds, they don't look quite the same as the other poppies but I will see. I am going to take out the big weed sometime this week.
Anyways, the new ones actually seemed to have been stuck under the dirt. I carefully dug two out, and they had been all folded up and a bit crushed by the chunkier soil. I should have used finer soil, ackk!
Conclusion!
So I think the tons and tons of watering from rain definitely helped, but storms are still bad for the plants. I don't know where I'd put them in a storm though. I don't really have room inside. Maybe in a more covered part outside that I have. Hopefully there won't be more storms, I will be able to do the watering myself now. Okay, goodbye!
